Tue 11th Jan: St Albans Environment Forum (*) – 7pm, Civic Centre. Topic: ‘Waste and Recycling’. Presentation on waste management in St Albans by Louise Palmer, SADC Recycling Officer, with particular attention to what happens to each material after it is collected for recycling or composting.

Wed 16th Feb: Open Meeting – 7.30pm, Fleetville Community Centre. This month’s theme was “Home Energy Improvements“. Our speaker, Phil Ainsworth, is a trained home energy assessor and also knowledgeable about domestic solar power. He gave us valuable ideas about the improvements we can make at home, and which ones give the best payback.

Sun 8th May: Free Compost (*) – 12 noon to 4pm, the Enterprise depot at Ronsons Way. St Albans City and District Council gave away 10 tonnes of free compost to mark International Compost Awareness Week. Residents could take away up to three bags full of peat-free compost. Details.

Wed 18th May: Open Meeting – 7.30pm, Fleetville Community Centre. Theme: Seedlings: sharing young plants and growing experience. There were seedlings available on the evening, mostly grown by the Home Grown Food Group, and there was a panel of experts on hand to answer questions! Details.
Sat 21st May: Earthworks Open Garden (*) – 12 noon to 4pm, Hixberry Lane – Organically grown vegetables and plants for sale; homemade food and refreshments; handmade country crafts for sale; live music and much more. Details.

Thu 26th May: St Albans Cycle Campaign (STACC) AGM & Public Meeting (*) – 7.30pm, Civic Centre. Speaker: Stuart Dennison of London’s Bikefix was going to look beyond the ordinary, in a tour of the exotic world of bikes and trikes, but got stuck for three hours on a First Capital Connect train out of London… Details.
JUNE
Sun 5th June: Big Lunch (*) – One day get-together for neighbours organised all over the country. More.

Wed 15th June: Open Meeting – 7.30pm, Fleetville Community Centre. Theme: Ideas from other Transition Towns. What are other Transition Initiatives doing? What might work in St Albans? How can we make it happen? A series of film clips, followed by discussion. Everybody welcome.
Sat 18th June to Sun 26th June: Bike Week 2011 (*) – National event supported locally by STACC, our local cycling campaign group, and SADC. Lots of cycle rides and other cycling-related activities on offer! Check out the STACC website for the programme.
Sun 19th June: Open Food Garden – any time between 3.00 and 6.00 –June and Arthur invite you to their garden at 23 Gresford Close, AL4. Details.
Sun 26th June: Larks in the Parks (*) – 12 noon to 5pm in 6 locations: Fleetville, Sopwell, London Colney, Colney Heath, Highfield Park and Victoria Playing Field. Music, workshops, games and much more will be on offer. Most of it free. Seaside theme this year. Pictures from Sopwell here.
Tue 28th June: TSA Courtyard Café Demonstration Garden working party – 11am to 12 noon. Another chance to volunteer at our demonstration garden outside the Courtyard Café on Hatfield Road. We will be doing some more planting, tidying up etc. Afterwards, those who want can stay for lunch or coffee and a chat.

Sun 3rd July: St Albans Festival of Life (*) – 12 noon to 4pm. Market stalls in St Peter’s Street – Celebration of the positive contribution that community groups make towards the protection of the environment and the health of local residents. Photos of our stall here.

A fun and informative evening, full of surprises, with: a quiz, the viewing of short interviews, informative tabulations, a short cookery demonstration and food tasting.
