As part of Transition St Albans continuing efforts to encourage the growing of food at home, TSA members who grow fruit and veg in their backgarden invite fellow residents to visit their garden, to ask questions and learn new ideas from experienced food growers.
On Saturday, 25th September, 2–5pm, Peter and Janette invited us all to visit theirs, a small urban garden, but beautiful and very productive, able to provide a lot of the fruit for the family!
Peter’s description of the garden
We inherited unkempt gardens, front and back, from an older person who could not give them much attention. The soil was a mixture of clay and builders rubbish!
We have designed and changed the back garden from what was a rough piece of grass with a Christmas Tree by building a pond, planting a range of flowering plants, herbs and fruit trees and pots of vegetables into what we hope is an attractive place to relax and a home for wildlife.
In September we should have some eating apples, a few pears and tomatoes. This summer we have ‘lost’ a large purple sage and have replaced it with a wigwam of runner beans under-planted with lettuce; will it work on this soil?
In the front we have another pond, thyme, marjoram, lavender, water mint, ferns and heathers which attract bees and frogs.
As the garden is small we grow most of our own vegetables on an allotment, in a part share of a poly-tunnel and on the Square Foot Garden.
