See and learn how people grow their own food in their garden at home, that’s what our free Open Food Garden events are about.
Tips to get you started, ideas to try something different…
On Saturday, 17th July, 2–5pm, Helen and Nicholas invited people to come and have a look at their garden in Marshalswick, near the Quadrant, in St Albans.
Helen’s description of the garden
We have a large 1/3 acre garden. Besides lawn, shrubs, a large copper beech and a range of other plants including plenty of weeds, there are many features of interest to those wishing to grow food.
Fruit trees are scattered around the garden. There are two well established large cooking apples and more recently planted a quince, minarette apples, a tree and an espalier pear. Soft fruit includes loganberry, jostaberry and recently planted autumn raspberries.
There are narrow beds for vegetables and herbs, one of which has sea kale, a green house, water butts, compost bins and many features to attract birds and other wildlife including a small pond. This year’s vegetables include purple sprouting, courgettes, scorzonera, an experimental perennial broccoli and lettuces.
