Green Drinks at the Farmer’s Boy, 134 London Road, St Albans at 8pm, the second Tuesday each month, is a forum for people concerned with the environment, climate change and peak oil to gather and share their thoughts.
Transition St Albans (TSA) is a group of people who are concerned as to how these issues might impact on St Albans, and are looking for positive actions to prepare for the changes, NOW. So you will often find some of our members at the Green Drinks.
However, we wanted to do even more and we decided to use the Green Drinks on Tuesday 12th October to showcase some of the ways in which we can develop the skills of growing our own food and making drinks.
David Curry of the Hertfordshire Orchard Initiative demonstrated making juice from apples gathered from local back gardens – with permission, of course!
Roselyne and Ananda created a vegetable garden in a pallet, from the back of a lorry so to speak, showing that creativity and reuse can save you money!
Heather, June, Peter B, Helen and other TSA members shared home grown vegetables, and swapped and gave away seeds and seedlings to get people to grow their own.
Romayne did a display, prepared by Dawn and herself, with photographs of the various Open Food Gardens this season, handed out TSA information leaflets and flyers with our autumn programme of events and ran a mini questionnaire asking people about growing their own.
Amanda brought some delicious home-baked cakes for all to enjoy – the apple recipes can be found here!
There were plenty of visitors and there was a really good atmosphere, with people chatting away, asking questions and sharing experience.
