Interested in starting a garden at your school, or wanting to make more of what you’ve got?
Then come along to an event all about starting and maintaining school gardens on Wed 26th May, 4pm to 6pm at the Camp School Allotments in St Albans.
Home-made refreshments included!
Run by Transition St Albans, the event will cover:
- A tour of the Camp School Allotments (lead by Annie New, the Camp School ESCO Coordinator);
- Practical guidance on how to start-up a school garden (lead by Amanda Yorwerth who is a professional gardener and, as a parent volunteer, helped establish the Wheatfields school garden);
- How to link the school garden to the primary curriculum (lead by Peter Bloomfield, Education Consultant for Sustainability and Visiting Lecturer at The University of Hertfordshire);
- How to engage secondary pupils with gardening, lead by Helen Gosnell, ESD Teacher at Sir John Lawes school and AST for Hertfordshire on Global Dimension and Sustainable Development.
There will be a particular focus on growing food plants, since children love to eat what they grow, and because it links so strongly into both the ESD and healthy living curriculums.
It is aimed at anyone interested in their school’s garden: Heads, teachers, site managers, parents or governors.
Please note: this event is about schools’ gardening, not just general gardening, so you need to be actively linked to a school in some way to attend.
The event is free but, since Transition St Albans is a local community group, run by volunteers, a small donation would be gratefully received to cover costs.
We’ll move inside if it’s wet. Wear shoes suitable for an allotment!
If you want to come to the event, please RSVP to Catherine Ross by emailing your name and school to cathross@bluestarfish.com or texting 07974 40 98 98.
